Two couples preparing for marriage are currently in pre-marital counseling. Pray for them to have godly marriages, being examples to their families, friends and churches. Living together, over and over is the norm. Pray for wisdom and grace as families want them to participate in traditional practices. Pray for Martin & Peggy** and Gary and Terri**. (Not their real names.)
Often in Soweto, water and electricity stop. Water is sometimes brought in by trucks. Other times people will go with wheelbarrows to a neighbourhood that has water and communal faucets. The search for water can be time consuming and tiring. This picture shows a borrowed water jug, a bucket and the handles of a wheelbarrow. As people spend time looking for earthly water PRAY they would ask for the gift of Living Water.
Praises to God for a successful youth camp. Four counselor leaders came from Oklahoma Baptist university and one from Braamfisher, Soweto. Two missionaries, one local pastor and his wife, and a local believer also helped with the teaching. Eighteen youth joined together to get Power. Pray, Witness, Rely (on God). The pictures from the top… working on a life timeline, small group discussion on goal setting, the group and our goofy look, friends praying together and yes, it does get cold in Africa. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRAYERS FOR THIS EVENT.
Coming in July for youth from 5 Soweto Baptist Churches and fellowships is a winter camp. The theme is PWR (pray, witness and rely). The theme verse is 2 Peter 1:3. A team of volunteers is coming from Oklahoma Baptist University to be counselors. Also 3 local believers are taking part, one as the boys counselor. Dates are 14-17 July. Please be in prayer for non believers to become born-again. And pray for those who have made a profession of faith to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus. Pray for leaders to emerge as churches have few adults. Pray for all camp “staff” to be an example in words and deeds of gracious strong believers. Pray for interactions at camp to be pleasing to the Lord.
Pictured are some of the youth. So very sorry, I could not get pictures to upload to this post.
Eleven, twelve, thirteen Those can be hard years to grow through. They are children, but also fast becoming youth. Their bodies are changing, sometimes too quickly and sometimes not fast enough. Life and emotions can be bewildering.
Kids in Soweto, South Africa are no exception. Could be harder for them. Strikes against then include; no good role models, no dad in the home, and sometimes no mom as a grandmother or aunt raises them. Add poverty, abuse and fear to produce weary stories. However, God loves them and wants them to grow in wisdom and knowledge of Him. And they have you praying for them. Praying they hear and believe Jesus is Good News. Pray they know the message is for them too. Praying for their safety. Praying for consistent food, shelter and love. ***the top two pictures are from one of three different age/sex groups from a four church session on body changes, salvation and abstinence. The bottom pix is of a relay at a Sunday school Easter party.
In March at the 2nd of six discipleship trainings for Soweto Baptist churches for this year, many youth from Faith Baptist Church were in attendance. They are shown here during tea time at the training.
Since then attendance at Sunday school has dropped off. Some of the challenges they face: Only two sisters of 21 kids have both parents in the home. Some don’t live with their parent. Another is the only one whose parent attends church. Safety is a real issue. Good role models few and far between. Please pray for these youth to be aware of the love of Christ. Pray they would be faithful. Pray for safety, wise decisions and the willingness to live their faith everyday.
We requested prayer for 14 youth from Faith Baptist Church, Snake Park, Soweto, South Africa, attending summer church camp in early January. Having never been to camp before, it took a few days for the youth to settle into ‘camp culture’, but they adjusted and loved it. Every day were two worship services plus Bible studies. Fanny* is a new believer and several others re committed their lives to their Jesus. Thank you for praying.
The pictures are a friend and Fanny. The whole group after a meal. Doing “a minute to win it” games.
In the last few weeks, three young men, from two churches, have been baptized and we are praising God. Coming 2-9 January 2015, fifteen youth from Faith Baptist Church in Snake Park are registered for summer camp. Pray none would back out. Pray those unsaved would meet Jesus there. Pray for leaders to emerge from the group. Pray when camp is over and school begins they would continue to live out what they learn at camp. Pray for them as they live with family members. Only one of their mothers comes to church.
‘FUGE-leaders volunteer team has arrived! Monday, they begin a full week of ministry. In Soweto, they will be leading devotions, sharing testimonies, singing, Bible stories and activities with kids–lots of kids, listening to the workers, doing garden work and accompanying the health care, orphan & education workers as they do their jobs.
In downtown Joburg (Johannesburg), they will be prayer walking, sharing the gospel in an area a local pastor hopes to begin a Francophone church, and teaching “American” sports at one high school.
Both teams will be visiting a local orphanage connected to a Baptist church downtown. You can find out more about this orphanage at http://www.onelifematters.org/projects click on One Baby South Africa.
Please pray that God would be in charge of the whole trip. Pray for interactions in which the Gospel gets to be shared. Pray the ‘FUGE team would spread the fragrance of Christ each place to go. Pray they will be an encouragement for the Boitshoko workers. Pray for safety and working the kinks out of the inevitable changes that will take place
