The family unit is quite broken among the peoples of Northern Madagascar, especially the Antankarana. It is unusual to find a married couple. Couples may have several children together but still not be married. Most don’t want to marry because they don’t plan to be with their partner for life. It is very common for children to be raised by grandparents or aunts and for their parents to be a 20 hour bus ride away. When fathers abandon their children while the children are still young, mother’s will tell them that their father died. Many adults today don’t know if their fathers really died or just left. This breakdown of the family causes many other problems. Many children grow up feeling unloved then they look for love in all the wrong places. Youth gangs, child and adult prostitution, and a general hardness of hearts are in part a result of this family breakdown. The good news is that our God is greater. Pray for the salvation of the Antankarana. Pray for godly, Christian Malagasy families to set an example of a healthy, loving family centered around Jesus Christ and His Word. Pray that as Antankarana people give their lives to Jesus, they would see a fundamental change in the family unit structure among them.
